This is just a short note as I have just joined the site. I have followed your recent forum on brake conversion with interest and would like to pose the question of how you deal with dual brake line feeds to a wilwood type single feed caliper? See e-mail below.

I have not been in contact for awhile but its that time of year when my 2002tii surfaces back into use again. last year its time on the road was limited due to front brake caliper problems which kept sticking so I have gone down the route of a ugprade from Ireland Engineering. This involves wilwood 4 pot single line calipers, Tarox e21 vented disc, e21 hubs & wheel bearings, e21 brake master cylinder. I have followed the brake conversion discussions on the Jiglu site but no one has made any reference to using dual circuit servo system and single feed calipers. Do you have to plug one of the feeds from each servo, ditch one servo or some how link the two seperate brake lines into one (bearing in mind that this is a RHD car subject to a UK MOT regulations)? I would appreciate if you could circulate this amongst your discussion group, perhaps there might be an easy solution. I look forward to hearing from you. Happy 02ing.

With the Wilwood calipers, some of them do not have dust seals as they are primarily designed for off road use only (and a disclaimer is included in the packaging) ie; racing, auto crossing, etc where they are not used on a regular basis. The end result is that psitons stick after periods of layup, the same as stock BMW ones do.
You can stop half the problems by putting rubber grease all the way around the piston and under the dust seal and this will last 3 to 4 years without any problems.
To convert to a single line system, you have 2 options.
1, Disconnect the circuit that does the front brakes only and plumb up the other circuit to the Wilwoods. You will have to remove/disable the front brake circuit servo as well.
2, Get a banjo union (similar to the ones on the outlet side of the brake servo) and fit it onto the caliper inlet hole. Then you can use it to connect both front brake pipes. The problem with this is that you are getting 2 lots of brake fluid being pushed into one hole. If the servo assistance is unbalanced it will affect the braking effort etc and can cause brake lockup. (We used this system in reverse when putting Metro calipers onto Mini big brake conversion kits but remember the Metro has a twin feed caliper).
In your case, I would recommend that you give your calipers to Big Red for refurbishment, get a spacer made up to fit between the caliper halves (or get a pair of E12 calipers) so that they fit over the E21 brake discs and them sell the Wilwoods on fleabay.

My 1502 has single line calipers at the front with twin servo's. If you have your calipers already it may be easy just to copy what BMW did as standard on the smaller 02's. I still had enough braking power to stand it on its nose on normal road driving but I don't race it so fading is not a problem.
