BMW Mobile Tradition reply - Paul Hill

Next
of 44 messages

I sent Mobile Tradition an email this morning and got this back this afternoon!

I gave them the colour of the car and the chassis number.

Dear Mr Hill,
Thank you for your email.
The BMW 2000 rhd Automatic was manufactured on December 2nd, 1971 and delivered on April 25th, 1972 to the importer BMW Concessionaires G.B. Ltd. The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085.

Unfortunately there are no details about interior and special options mentioned in the delivery books. Maybe you are lucky and able to find the so called "Laufzettel" ('Production note'. PH) under the rear seat bench (where the colours and options are coded). Then you can send me a picture of the "Laufzettel" and I will check the options lists for more information.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

You should be running it on black plates then eh!  Or is the car already known as historic?  Can you pass on the email addy for MT as i'd like to check up on mine too.  I know mine was built in 71 going by the tii register but it would be nice to get more info if they have it.

Got pics from battlesbridge?  I have some to upload though only 02 snap is the inka as the one of yours didn't come out to well.

I have a cert for my cabriolet and it looks quite nice but i only wanted the official build date for tax exemption purposes -  unfortunately i missed the cut off date by 3 months! So just to have a certificate, i'm sure if its worth 55 euros - might be useful for insurance purposes?

But how good are MT at replying to emails!

Franc

We all own old bimmers and cherish them. Most of us have a folder full of old MOT's, tax discs, magazine articles, old receipts and miscellaneous related 02 bumph. That all goes hand in hand with owning old cars.

I'm pretty exited you can get your cars 'birth certificate' from the manufacturer! €55 well spent in my book.

It will be very interesting to see when your car was manufactured Damon as yours is a very early RHD Tii.

I'm not a great photo taker but I did snap a photo of yours on my phone

Thanks Paul, I'll post up the reply from HT when i receive it.  I asked if they could confirm the start date of Tii production too so we can get a rough idea of how many were built before it.

It appears mine was originally a Polaris!  Interesting that it was delivered to the importer the same day.  Does anyone know of the official uk launch of the tii?

Dear Mr Hatcher,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2002 tii rhd VIN 2750497 was manufactured on December 20th, 1971 and delivered the same day to the BMW importer BMW Concessionaires G.B. Ltd. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz

what color is it now? As BMW had a problem with the clear coat on metalic paint in the early days and I think they re-srayed some cars in a solid color free of charge.

I found this on the web Damon - Earls Court, London International Motor Exhibition was held on then 30th October 1971. (Don't know if this was the official UK launch or not?)

So your car was delivered just under two months after the 1971 Motor show and it is the 497th car RHD 2002tii manufactured right?

You should be able to find some Polaris on it somewhere. Try lifting the rear seat?

Some of the cars I own where delivered straight away and some were shipped a couple of weeks/months later??

There can't be many 71 Tii's left now Damon.

Be good to confirm the launch of the RHD BMW Tii.

best Paul Hill

Dear all,

Firstly, please excuse the last empty e-mail – technology and me are having issues today!

Secondly, I am looking for a spare part and was hoping someone might have a parts car laying around with the following attached or better still, the unit itself. The attached picture shows what I am after –
I need the floor mounting point for the accelerator pedal – I grabbed this picture from the net. My car is a bit of a mongrel – previous owner decided that instead of fixing the pedal properly, he would
just rig up an after-market item to the pedal itself and do away with the floor mount at together. I want to fix this before I finish re- installing my carpet if possible. If anyone has a parts car that they are cutting up or can think of a decent way to sort this I'd be happy to hear from them.

Thanks in advance

Jon

Hi Jon,
This is the first part that rusts out, is spot welded to the floor and is not available from BMW. In the past, I have made mine up and welded them to the floor as per original.
I am off to NZ on Saturday and I can make one up for you, but you won't get it for a couple of weeks.
If you want me to make one, email me and I will see what I can do.
Cheers,
John.

Hi James,

It's the chamonix one in the above pic.  Thats interesting to know about the paint recall, perhaps thats the cause of the change.  From memory I havent spotted any polaris.  Looking through the pics I've taken of the boot floor, door innards etc and they are all chamonix so i think it was an extensive job whoever did it.  i feel like doing the car version of "who are you" where I track down the previous owners and history of the car!

Paul I'd hazard a guess and say you're right as they launched the turbo at a motor show they may very well have done the same with the tii.  I guess the delivery turnaround was based on demand.  A new model would have been quick to distribute as may have been on order etc..  I'd assume 497th is right but i wonder how many of those were RHD's.  Will be on the polaris search at the weekend!

Damon your car was UK registered on 02 Feb 72 right?

According to the RHD Chassis numbers they run from model '71. 2750 001 to 2752 447 june '71 to aug '73 (2,447 made) all chrome fronted round rear light models. Then model '73. 2770 001 to 2771 233 aug '73 to 0ct '75 (1,233 made) black fronted square rear lamp models. All Right hand drive.

I have a MOTOR Magazine road test. Dated week ending December 18th, 1971. BMW 2002Tii. The car in the article. Reg ANJ 985J was Beige (road tax last due on the 28/02/85 first registered 22/06/71 – I guess its dead now)

Let me know if you find any Polaris paint. John Hudson is sure to know the best place to look.

I told a guy today – his 1968 2000 Granada red Neue Klasse was delivered from Munich to Hong Kong and was originally white. He point blank wouldn't believe me on either colour or delivery of his car (after me double checking his chassis number, I don't have his reg unfortunately) .....there's no helping some people!

Take the back seat (back rest) out and lift up the rear trim panel. You should find some colour there or have a look up under the dash and down the A pillars.

Hi Damon – very few original Polaris cars left as the metallic paint was a poor formula and they all faded, although I thought they’d got it right by 1971.

First right hand drive Tii VIN was made in June ‘71 and started with VIN 2750 001 – so I guess yours was the 497th off the line. Time to get an early nose back on your car and buy some silver paint!

Sorry for repeating most of the info that had already been posted on the subject of Tii VIN’s!

On another note – finally had time to get my 1976 Daimler Double Six Coupe going yesterday. Among many little problems was a leaking fuel pump – whipped it off and thought it looked familiar. Despite a LUCAS sticker it’s exactly the same as a Tii pump, down to the numbers stamped on the case. Next time someone needs one try any old motor factors and ask for this piece – you never know it might be available for peanuts as I know BMW charge quite a few euros for it.

Luckily had a new Tii pump on the shelf and now the Daimler’s purring again.
