Tax exempt??

12 messages

Can anyone accurately date a cars birth? I phoned the dealer but they told me my 2002 touring was a 1988 325i? DVLA will except written conformation from a dealer (unlikely to happen) or a club. Where do I start? Any links/info will be handy, thanks, Kev.

If You take your log book to your local Dealer they are supposed to give you a Certificate (£cost of course) with the actual date it was made on. You might need this to prove it's DOB.

Hi, the chassis number is 3441492. It's a 2002 touring. Where would you get your info from & would DVLA accept this if it proves to be pre 73? Thanks, Kev.

As I've said, I've tried a dealer & they say it's an 88 325i.

Dear Kev

You chassis number falls being built somewhere between January 1973 and August 1973 in a batch from chassis number 3441114 to 3441537. This information is taken from Mike Macartney's "The BMW 02 Restoration Guide."

If you need proof of a date of building you can email BMW here: ....

BMW have wiped over many of the original numbers with later models on their general database (helpful huh?) but their archie department can usually help. One of our customers got through to the dvla OK with a printed out email from BMW.

I hope this is of help.

Regards
Fay

Thanks for everyone's help. I have found out my car is number 1492 out of 1537, so only 45 away from being the last RHD 2.0 touring. As the last was produced in sept 73, it is unlikely mine is tax exempt. Mine is actually registered Aug 1 1974 on an " N " reg, so could be the last one sold in UK ?? Interesting finding out though, even if it does mean I have to throw £200 a year at our government so they can continue to keep our roads in a dreadfull state!!

If you can prove it was made before the cut of date you can get tax free status. even if was not registered until 74.

Fay, can you give any clues on chassis no 1659656?  That’s what my 2002 calls itself, but that number doesn’t appear in Mike’s list as far as I could see.

Thanks

Tim

Hi Tim

According to the list in Mike's book its a Model '71 manufactured between Jan 1973 and April 1973, so it looks like you've just missed the cut-off with it. (Page 210, second batch of E12 mod 71's).

Hope this helps
